Narrator and point of view
The short story “The Death of Tommy Grimes” by R.J. Meaddough, III is told by a third-person narrator. The narrator adopts Tommy’s perspective throughout the story, following his thoughts and reactions.
The story opens in medias res with Tommy’s perspective of the hunting trip: “Tommy had become part of the ground. At least he felt that way as he watched the dew and the daylight make giant shiny cobwebs of the treetops” (p. 1, ll. 1-2). Tommy’s perspective is also used during flashbacks: “It started so long ago, Tommy remembered, almost a year, when he was just eleven” (p. 1, l. 8).
