Narrator and point of view
The first-person narrator of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is the main character, Christopher Boone. Christopher explains that he starts writing the book as a project for school, after he decides to investigate the death of his neighbor’s dog Wellington. His teacher Siobhan prompts him to write down his experiences and thoughts:
‘Well, we’re meant to be writing stories today, so why don’t you write about finding Wellington and going to the police station.’
And that is when I started writing this.
And Siobhan said that she would help with the spelling and the grammar and the footnotes. (pp. 33-34)
Christopher has a distinctive narrative voice, because he is neurodivergent and probably has a condition such as autism or Asperger’s syndrome. Christopher finds it hard to empathize with other people and struggles...
