Structure

The short story “The Cherry Tree” by Lisa Blower has a linear plot structure.

The narrative begins in medias res with Roxanne asking Thea to allow her to pick the cherries from her garden (ll. 3-4). 

The main external conflict of the story is between Thea and Roxanne and Toby. Thea dislikes Roxanne and Toby from the beginning. She is bothered by the fact that they believe they can get everything they want: “ ‘Life isn’t about getting your own way, and your son needs to be shown there’s a better way.’ ” (ll. 55-56). However, the true reason why Thea dislikes Roxanne might be because she has a child, and another on the way, while Thea cannot have children. Thea’s tragedy is revealed in a flashback: “she had always wanted children (…) she remembered the rage like yesterday, the kicks and the screams (…) Thea had detached her...
