Style of writing in lines 61-73

Your exam question asks you to look at the language in lines 61-73 in the short story “The Arcade” by Alan Gillespie. The style of writing in this section is informal and contains a lot of direct speech. 

The direct speech sounds very casual and natural. For example, Bill tells the fake story about his and Gaynor’s engagement using short and incomplete sentences which mirror the natural way someone might talk: “So we went. All the railings are covered in them. From all over the world. It was sunny – remember, darling? – and the padlocks were glittering. Like diamonds. Like stars.” (ll. 65-66). The interjection “– remember darling –” is also typical of spoken language.
