Criticism of the American Dream

The American Dream has changed over time but continues to fascinate and inspire both Americans and people worldwide. However, there are also people who no longer believe in the American Dream or at least consider it flawed.

Some argue that, nowadays, the American Dream is only accessible to a minority while the rest no longer have access to upward social mobility. Others argue that discrimination has always been a challenge for the American Dream. Others still look at how the American Dream seems to encourage consumerism, a way of life which can be very harmful for the environment.

In the next three pages of this guide, you can read a detailed description of some of the most frequent criticisms of the American Dream: lack of social mobility, discrimination, and consumerism.
