Discuss the American Dream

Arguments in favour of the ideal of the American Dream

Most arguments in favour of the ideal of the American Dream are present in Texts II and V, but you can find some positive points in the other texts as well.

One main favourable argument is the fact that hard work makes the American Dream achievable. This is suggested in Text V when Donald Trump argues that families teach their children the importance of hard work. Additionally, Text II notes that people should learn that “There Is No Underdog” (l. 51), meaning that they should develop the belief that anything can be achieved with hard work, regardless of their economic circumstances and background.

Another argument in favour of the American Dream is that it is achievable through individual initiative, ambition, and the right connections. These aspects are presented at length in Text II.

By choosing to “Focus On The People” (l. 16), you pay attention to the people you associate with when starting a business or develop professionally. By fighting “For Your Aspirations” (l. 28), you rely on ambition to overcome your condition. This also implies you need to “Roll With The Punches” (l. 42), which means developing the ability to overcome failures and setbacks by focusing on the bigger life goals you have. Also, the ideal of the American dream allows you not to be afraid to “Take Unconventional Paths” (l. 35) to achieve success. What matters is that the path you choose to take has long-term benefits.

Another argument supporting the ideal of the American Dream is that reforms can create favourable conditions for achieving it. This is suggested in Text V when Donald Trump proposes a comprehensive tax reform to help people follow their dream.
