Alienation

The short story “The Aliens” by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala explores the theme of alienation, particularly through the main character, Peggy. She is a young English woman who, after her marriage to Dev, moves to India to live with Dev’s family. Peggy’s feeling of alienation in India has various reasons. Initially, when dreaming about her married life, Peggy imagined it as “romantic and exciting” (l. 143). We also see that Peggy expected to live alone with her husband and to have intimacy. Dev, however, does not understand his wife’s point of view: “Dev was embarrassed — they had been over this before and had failed to see each other’s point of view.” (ll. 94-95). Consequently, Peggy feels alienated, as she is not currently living the life she dreamed about.

Furthermore, while she was in England, Peggy used to work in an office. While in India, her sense of alienation is heightened, as the only job she is allowed to do is folding her clothes (ll. 113-115). Peggy also feels alienated because of the Indian customs she cannot understand....
