Summary

The short story “The Aliens” by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala presents the experiences of Peggy, an English woman who is married to Dev and has moved to India to live with his family.

The story begins with Peggy waking up to the sound of an argument between her mother-in-law and her sister-in-law, Sarla. At breakfast, Peggy notices that Dev eats a lot, encouraged by his mother. Sarla talks about going on holiday to a cooler place, but the mother-in-law is against it. When Suraj comes for breakfast, Sarla complains about the heat and suggests that her husband does not want to leave the city because he is too interested in another woman. The mother-in-law takes Suraj’s side, and she and Sarla fight. Peggy goes to her bedroom and complains to Dev about not having a place of their own.
