The woman

The woman is a main character in the short story “That Same Sea” by Adrian Markle. She was born and raised in the village of Gorran Haven, but now she lives in the city. She is not described physically, and we do not know her age. She is in a relationship with the man. 

At first, it appears that the woman can be her real self only when she is in her native village. The man is surprised by her knowledge and confident attitude while there, which means that she is not usually like this. She also says that the things she does in the city are “to make city life bearable” (l. 45). This suggests that she believes she can only be herself and let go of the pretense of being someone else, when she is in the country.
