Characters

The main characters in the short story “That Same Sea” by Adrian Markle are the man, who is also the narrator, and the woman, who is the narrator’s partner. Their relationship is an important point in the story. They are on vacation in the village where the woman grew up. While at the beach, they come across a hurt sheep, which they rescue from a grotto. The experience appears to bring them closer together.

The other character in the story is the Cornish boy, who takes the lost sheep on his bike. He is important because he is a local and has an experience of village life which exceeds that of the woman. His localness is underlined by his dialect. Therefore, both the man and the woman recognize his authority.
