Broken families 

The main theme of the short story “Store Room” by Doug Warshauer is broken families. 

The divorce of Brian’s mother and father splits the family in two. The children are forced to choose ‘whose side’ they take in the fight. Brian chooses to stay with his father, probably because he feels closer to him, and because of the common interests they share. Not being chosen hurts the mother enough to block Brian entirely out of her life (ll. 90-92). Not only does she not contact him for four years, but she also removes all reminders of him from the house, such as his baseball photos which used to be pinned to the refrigerator door (ll. 60-63). She turns Brian’s room into a store room, which gives him a clear signal that he has lost his right to it and is now a guest in his own house. ...
