Structure

The short story “Store Room” by Doug Warshauer has a linear plot structure.

The narrative begins in medias res, with Samantha answering the door as Brian rings. At this point, the readers have no information about the characters, whose relationship is gradually revealed to us. Although the plot is chronological, Brian remembers several moments from the past, connecting them to the present. For instance, the relationship between Samantha and Brian is revealed in a flashback (ll. 7-11), as Brian remembers how they used to walk home from school and share their thoughts. 

Brian’s relationship with his mother is also gradually revealed to us through his flashbacks. In one such flashback, Brian remembers his mother teaching him piano and hugging him (ll. 66-69). This shows us that, before the divorce, they had ...
