Characters

The main character from Doug Warshauer’s short story “Store Room” is Brian, a 15-year-old boy whose parents divorced four years ago. After his father’s death, Brian returns home to his mother, who has not forgiven him for choosing to live with his father instead of her.

The other characters are Brian’s mother and his younger sister, Samantha. Brian has not spoken to them in four years because his mother decided to cut all contact with him and his father. While we do not know Samantha’s thoughts and feelings about the situation, she seems to be affected by her mother’s decision. The relationship between the characters illustrates the story’s main theme of broken families.

You can read a full characterization of Brian and a more detailed analysis of the relationship between him and the other characters in the following pages.
