Brian misses his father and the relationship they shared

Brian had a good relationship with his father. The two of them shared several common interests, such as baseball and computer games, which is probably why Brian preferred to live with him instead of with his mother. It is a normal choice to make for a child, and it does not mean he does not love his mother. It is the mother who took this the wrong way, by making Brian feel that he was somehow at fault for hurting her feelings.

His father’s death makes Brian feel like he has lost everything (ll. 135-137). This shows the strength of Brian’s feelings for his father. Brian’s decision to hide the photo does not mean that his feelings for his father have changed. However, he understands that in order to earn his mother’s affection, he will have to hide his feelings for his father, just like he represses his feelings of hurt caused by the way his mother treats him. However, it is almost ironic that in order to regain his mother’s love, he must remove his father from his life entirely – just as his mother did to Brian.
