Style of language

The language of the short story “Strawberry Spring” by Stephen King is generally easy to follow and understand. However, the language can appear fragmented. Comments and explanations are sometimes inserted in the middle of a sentence: “until the time of her death she had been editor of the school newspaper (a once-weekly rag with a lot of political cartoons and bombastic letters), a member of the student dramatics society” (ll. 121-122). This is done to draw attention to the line, bring clarifications, or strengthen the message of the text.

The choice of words indicates an informal style of writing. Certain informal expressions, such as “I'll spot you ten” (l. 198) or “were salting plainclothes” (170), are used. Contractions such as “isn’t”, “can’t”, “they’re”, etc. are present throughout the text. They are used only in the dialogue, giving it authenticity and conveying a feeling of familiarity between the characters. Abbreviations such as SDS (l. 157) or “'Trig prelim” (l. 199) are also used.

Repetitions are also frequently used within the story: “Dancey, an education major and a speech minor, screamed and screamed and screamed.” (ll. 38-39);...
