General aspects

The main character of the short story “Strawberry Spring” by Stephen King is an unnamed narrator. He is the protagonist of the story, and the narration follows his point of view He is a developing character because his way of acting and thinking changes throughout the story.

The narrator’s roommate and the narrator’s wife are secondary characters. They are both characters that do not develop. The story also features tertiary characters such as the victims, the police officers, and the other students.

The narrator

There is no direct description of the way the narrator looks or dresses, however, he carries a rabbit’s-foot key chain (ll. 60-61), and he implies that he has fangs (ll. 57-58). The narrator’s age is also never explicitly stated, but since he was in his final year of studies (l. 247), it could be safe to assume that he was in his early or mid-20s while in college, and that at the moment of narration, he is in his early 30s. The narrator used to be a student at New Sharon Teachers' College (l. 12), and after graduation, he was employed at a local publishing house (ll. 247-248).

Inner characterisation

The narrator seems to be drawn towards the dark atmosphere of the strawberry spring. When his mother worries for his safety and asks him to come home (l. 7), the narrator refuses, stating that he was “Enchanted by that dark and mist-blown strawberry spring (…)” (l. 8).
