Title

The title of the short story “Stench of Kerosene” by Amrita Pritam is intriguing, as it does not reveal much about the plot. Kerosene, which is a combustible liquid, is usually used as fuel in households or to power the motors of boats, motorcycles, and planes. The word stench has a negative meaning, which could hint at the tragic ending of the story.

After reading the story, the meaning of the title becomes easy to understand, as it refers to how Guleri ends her life: “ ‘When she heard of your second marriage, she soaked her clothes in kerosene and set fire to them.’ ” (p. 5, ll. 22-23). The title is also connected to the end of the story, when Manak becomes convinced that his new-born son smells of kerosene: “Then suddenly the blank eyes filled with horror, and Manak began to scream. ‘Take him away!’ he shrieked hysterically, ‘Take him away! He stinks of kerosene.’ ” (p. 6, ll. 12-14). This shows that Manak will always associate his son with the death of his first wife.
