Forms of appeal

The dominant forms of appeal in Arnold Schwarzenegger's speech at the Republican National Convention from 2004 are ethos and pathos. 

Ethos

Schwarzenegger frequently appeals to trust and authority in his speech. He does this through attempts to present himself and the presidential nominee he supports, George W. Bush, as knowledgeable, caring, and legitimate: “I said, ‘Then I am a Republican.’ And I have been a Republican ever since! And trust me -- And trust me in my wife's family, that's no small achievement.” (ll. 72-75); “That's what I admire most about the President: He is a man of perseverance. He's a man of inner strength. He's a leader who doesn't flinch, who doesn't waiver, and does not back down.” (ll. 155-158);

The speaker also borrows ethos from famous Republican Party figures and Republican values, in an attempt to build both legitimacy and trust: “But I am proud to be wit...
