Literary period

The short story “Soldier’s Home” by Ernest Hemingway belongs to the modernist movement in literature. One of the features of modernism is the focus on realistic events and experiences. These are present in the short story through the example of Krebs and his involvement in World War I.

More specifically, Hemingway's novel is an example of literary minimalism, a style particularly favored by Hemingway. We can see this through Hemingway's use of the so-called iceberg theory, a style of writing that leaves the majority of the plot 'below the surface', requiring interpretation from the readers.
