Upward social mobility refers to people being able to climb the social ladder, to move from the working class to the middle class. This ability to move upwards is usually influenced by access to education and better-paying jobs, by economic dynamics, and by the housing market.
Class differences have always been present in Britain, together with a strong sense of class identity. However, in the last decades, there has been an ongoing debate about upward social mobility getting worse, about more and more people being unable to climb the social ladder because of a number of social, economic, and geographic factors.
All the texts in your exam set focus on the latest findings of a government report on social mobility in Britain. The 2016 report shows social mobility is decreasing and includes various recommendations to improve the situation.
