The short story “So Much Water So Close to Home” by Raymond Carver presents events that take place in the US. The narrative focuses on the surroundings of the Naches River. The men “parked the car in the mountains and hiked to where they wanted to fish” (ll. 38-39). The focus is on the river, where the girl’s dead body is abandoned (ll. 50-52). The remoteness of the place is also important, as Stuart offers it as the reason why the men decided not to turn around and report the girl’s body to the police (ll. 46-47). This suggests the men’s lack of empathy as they are more interested in fishing than in dealing with the girl’s dead body. On the other hand, the remoteness of the place also adds to the mystery, as readers cannot know for certain what happened there.
