Characters

Here we give you a brief overview of the characters in “Slut Trouble” by Beejay Silcox.

The most important ones are Laura and Megan. Megan’s father - Mr Henderson is a secondary character. Laura’s mother also appears briefly in the story. The story also mentions the kidnapping victims – Julie-Anne Marks and Kimberly Watson – and their families and acquaintances, as well as Megan’s mother Lisa, and Laura’s grandmother.

At the beginning of the story, Laura is a stereotypical teenager – she is competitive, childish, concerned with her looks, and she wants to appear cool in Megan's eyes. She has never had a boyfriend and is probably unsure of herself like many teenagers. However, as things become more serious throughout the short story, Laura changes and starts exploring her darker side as well as the more adult side to her personality.

Megan is also influenced by the kidnappings and by the way others relate to them. She is portrayed as a stereotypical teenage girl who is probably confused by what is happening around her, as well as by her growing up process.

Mr Henderson is symbolic for all men who reduce women to their sexuality and who believe that violence against women is a consequence of women’s behaviour, rather than a consequence of men’s problematic attitudes and actions. Mr Henderson does not understand that his attitude can negatively affect Laura and Megan.
