Relationship between Norman and Daniel

Unexpected bond

Norman and Daniel are inmates who escape together from prison. The story “Self Defense” by Samuel Wilkins suggests that they met in prison, where they shared a cell for five and a half years. (l. 191) This also means that they had the opportunity to get to know each other very well: “Over the years we had talked about nearly everything under the sun; we no longer had need for words.” (ll. 37-38).

Norman and Daniel are both heterosexual, or at least claim to be. However, in prison, they formed an unexpected bond (ll. 41-42), and Norman has grown to love Daniel. Norman’s words suggest that he wanted to continue their relationship outside of prison as well: “Just had to go waste all our gas money on love we could’ve had for free. Love that he had the whole five and a half years while we shared that cell together.” (ll. 190-191).

From the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Norman’s inner conflict, which develops throughout the story. At first, we learn that Norman regrets not telling Daniel how he felt about him: “I could honestly say I loved the man. But I’d never actually said it out loud. I wish I would’ve told him that night.” (ll. 44-45).

Norman’s inner conflict deepens as he learns that Daniel plans to commit another crime. This affects their relationship, as Norman is compelled to believe that Daniel is only using him because he is easily manipulated. This is suggested when Norman discovers the guns in the car, and becomes angry (and possibly jealous):

I could tell he wished Stuart was in the car instead of me. He always thought I was a bitch. Hell, let’s be honest, that’s why he picked me in the first place. I’d always been his bitch. Just his property to do with as he pleased.” (ll. 121-123).
