The overall tone of the article is warm and casual, as Haskell wants to suggest Gomez is an approachable person and not some inaccessible celebrity: “I tell her that real isn’t the first word that springs to mind when faced with these ingredients” (ll. 9-10).
Sometimes the tone of the article is more heartfelt and empathetic as the text conveys some of the difficulties and challenges Gomez had to put up with on her way to fame: “I wonder whether her legions have felt for years the same sharp pang of protectiveness that I’m feeling at present” (ll. 40-41).
