Title

The title of the short story “The Idea” by Raymond Carver has both a literal and a symbolic meaning.

In the literal sense, the title is a direct reference to the narrator’s last words in the ending of the short story: “ ‘That trash,’ I said. ‘The idea!’ ” (p. 66, l. 40) It draws the reader’s attention, signaling that this line is meaningful within the text and it defines the way the story should be read and interpreted. The phrase “the idea” is intended to show the narrator’s outrage at the undressing woman’s actions. However, the narrator could also use this sense of outrage to hide her fascination with the couple’s voyeuristic relationship.
