Arlene Miller

Arlene is discontent with her relationship and life

Arlene Miller is the female main character in “Neighbors” by Raymond Carver. Lik her husband, Bill, she seems dissatisfied with her life. She works in a job where she has “secretarial chores” (p. 86, l. 4), which points to her worklife not being that exciting. 

As the Stones leave on their holiday, Arlene expresses envy at their freedom and privilege: “ ‘God knows, we could use a vacation,’ Arlene said.” (p. 87, l. 10). It seems that going away on holiday is either not something she and her husband can afford or just not an activity that they get around to doing. In any case, she seems to feel a lack of excitement and freedom in her life.
