Uddrag

Symbols

The characters in the title could be symbolic of Al’s problems. Since Jerry is a bartender, he could symbolize Al’s drinking problem. Alternatively, since Jerry can apparently fix things, he is also symbolic of Al’s wish to fix his own life.  Molly, on the other hand, could symbolize his problems with women, especially his affair with Jill. Molly’s rejection also demonstrates to Al that fixing his problems will not be as easy as he expected. Molly’s suitcase could be symbolic of Al’s need to escape the situation he is in. While he is driving with Suzy, Al “wished he could keep driving and driving tonight” (p. 121, ll. 16-17).Sam, Al’s childhood pet, could represent Al’s lost past and a longing for a time when he did not have any worries. Sam is also associated with his mother and a desire to return to his childhood home, where he will no longer have any responsibilities.
