Summary

Raymond Carver’s short story “Collectors” begins with the narrator lying on a sofa waiting for the mailman. The narrator is unemployed, and he is waiting for some news. He hears footsteps and a knock on the door but initially avoids answering. He eventually asks who is at the door, and a man introduces himself as Aubrey Bell. Bell asks whether the narrator is Mr. Slater, but the narrator does not reply. Bell tells him that he is there because Mrs. Slater has won something.

The narrator opens the door, and Bell enters the house. Bell claims he feels ill, so the narrator brings him two aspirins, then asks Bell to leave.
