Title

The title of the short story is very suggestive to those who are familiar with historical facts about South Africa. During the apartheid regime (marked by racial segregation and discrimination against the black population), ‘middle children’ was a name for racially-mixed people (those who had both white and black parents/ancestors). Consequently, the title suggests the action takes place in South Africa during the apartheid regime and that the characters are middle children.
