Setting

The short story “Ray the Rottweiler” by Alice Jolly takes place in a village in the United Kingdom, and the action spans over several months.

The physical setting is indicated through typical British language such as “blokes” (l. 87), or the direct address “love” (l. 115), but also through the direct reference to “Worcester” (l. 48), a city in the UK.

Though we are not told the exact date, we can assume the story was meant to be contemporary to the time of publishing, 2015. However, we do know that the events start in “spring-nearly-summer” (l. 11) continue until autumn, and resume six months after that (l. 142).

The most important elements of the physical setting are Ray’s two houses. Initially, Ray lives in an isolated area on a property where he houses numerous Rottweiler dogs:

The social setting conveys aspects related to life in a small rural community. It touches upon issues like gossip, rejection, bullying, and also parental care.

From the beginning, we find out that Ray is the talk of the village. He is gossiped about and judged by others:

They tell stories about him in the pub. Used to work in the cider factory. No, the morgue in Hereford. Son of a millionaire-film-star-celebrity with an Aston Martin and all. Family keep him out of the way down here. Well, you would do, wouldn’t you? (ll. 1-4)
