Narrator and point of view
The short story “Ray the Rottweiler” by Alice Jolly is a first-person narration; the events are rendered in the present tense from by Tess, the character-narrator: “Except me. Now. Walking down the track towards his crooked…” (l. 10).
The narrator has limited knowledge of the events which she shares with the readers as they happen. However, even though the events are conveyed in the present tense, the narrator suggests that she already knows what is about to happen: “And just for a while the dogs are silent and the whole world is quiet and the green around us holds us quite still. And that – that particular moment – is what I’ll remember later.” (ll. 106-108)
As a character-narrator, Tess conveys the story from her perspective, which is subjective....
