Characters

The main character in the short film “Prom” by Imran J. Khan is Hasan. His prom date Bethany, her mother Mrs Wheeler, and the cashier at the supermarket, are secondary characters in the film. Hasan's father also appears briefly at the beginning and end of the story. 

Hasan

Hasan is the child of Indian immigrants, as suggested by his father’s language. His Arabic name – Hasan – is indicative of his Muslim religion.

His outer characterisation tells us that Hasan is between 17 and 19 years old. This is suggested by him attending prom, as this event is typically attended by teenagers in the last year of high school. For prom, Hasan is wearing a black suit with a red tie and sports shoes, suggesting that he has chosen to add an element of his personality to the formal dress requirement.

Hasan’s physical appearance is also important because his ethnicity is the reason why Mrs Wheeler rejects him: “we have a lot of family and friends back home who will see pictures from tonight and we felt it wouldn’t be a good fit” (06:18-06:26).
