Interpretation

In the following pages, you can find our detailed suggestions for an interpretation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

The main themes of the novel are pride, prejudice, love and marriage, and social class. All of these themes interconnect.

The author explores these themes through characters, plot, and setting in order to convey several critical messages about the society she lives in. Austen speaks her mind about the relationship marriage and social class, our tendency to judge others, and women’s dependency on marriage to secure status and financial security.

Both themes and messages are complimented by the presence of a few symbols such as dancing, being outdoors, and the estates owned by the characters. These symbols add to our understanding of the characters, their social status, and how they feel about each other.
