Poverty is especially damaging to children

It may be relevant to bring up the fact that children are at particular risk, both because they are often powerless to improve their situation, and because some of the side effects of poverty are especially damaging to them. For example, malnutrition during childhood can have a negative impact on development throughout one’s life, as well as hurting one’s chances of completing an education successfully (thus making it even more likely that the cycle of poverty continues). 

In connection with your account of children and poverty, it may also be relevant to bring up the general stigma around poverty. This stigma may leave some children ashamed to admit that their family is struggling, because they fear the other children at school will look down on them.
