Structure

The short film “Owen” directed by Kelly Pike has a chronological structure. The film follows Hellen, a homeless woman, from morning to the evening of the same day. The action is structured around Hellen’s inner conflict, since she has to get rid of the dog she loves in order to get off the streets.

At the beginning, we are introduced to Hellen and her dog Owen as they wake up in their tent (00:03-01:22). The scenes reveal that Hellen is homeless, which is the main issue that the film deals with. 

When Hellen goes to the local council to look for housing, the film introduces the point of no return. She is offered housing, under the condition that she gets rid of Owen, as the housing available for her does not allow pets.
