Style of language

The novel Normal People by Sally Rooney uses a modern and informal style of language. Rooney uses contractions and casual words both in the dialogue and in the narration, which reflects the narrators’ unfiltered thoughts.

An interesting linguistic choice to note in Normal People is the lack of quotation marks throughout the book. This gives the book a modern feel and does not differentiate between various modern forms of communication such as in-person conversation using direct speech or emails and texts.
