In her article “My seven-year-old son the boxer”, Sarah Hughes explores the reasons for and against letting Oisín try boxing. She also talks about how the boxing world has changed since she began her career reporting on boxing events.

The message that the author is trying to convey is not explicit. Hughes presents her fears and doubts and gives readers various information about the boxing world, focusing on the amateur wing as it is relevant for her son’s preoccupation with the sport.

At the beginning of the article, we learn that the writer’s son, Oisín, becomes passionate about boxing. Contrary to his mother’s expectations, this passion persists, and the writer has mixed feelings about letting him try the sport.

The writer’s mixed feelings originate in her own passion for boxing; at the same time, she is very aware that it is a potentially dangerous sport and does not want her son to get hurt. Hughes loves boxing as a sport – this is further enhanced by her experience as a reporter covering boxing events. She mentions how she praised fighters for their performance and thinks it might be hypocritical of her to stop Oisín from experiencing the sport.

Therefore, the first reason for letting Oisín box is his and his mother’s passion for the sport. Although Oisín ignores the possibility of getting hurt and becomes frustrated when an adult points it out to him, his mother is very aware of it (ll. 58-61). This is the first reason for not letting Oisín try out boxing.
