Uddrag

Title

The title of the short story “Mother of the City” does not immediately indicate what the story is about.

The symbolic meaning of the title is suggested when a friend of Michelle’s seems to warn Douglas about the potential consequences of him insisting that the city is dangerous. He tells him a story about how Michelle’s previous boyfriend became paralyzed after an accident. The story alludes to the fact that Michelle has a deeper connection with the city than Douglas imagines, perhaps even a supernatural one. This profound connection is revealed later in the story, when Michelle’s friend, Pony-Tail, suggests that Douglas is in danger because he tried to hurt Michelle (p. 86, ll. 35-36). Pony-Tail’s words seem to be confirmed as Douglas tries to escape the city: the people in the city seem threatening, he is stabbed by the shattered glass of a shop window, he is run over by two cars, and the streets themselves seem to lead him to the Embankment, to drown him in the river.
