Direct references

The writer uses direct references when he explicitly mentions people, events, media, etc. that are relevant for exploring the topic. Blecher’s article is filled with such direct references, which help the writer build his arguments and explore the development of the New York City diner.

For example, in the beginning, he describes the diner using the lyrics of American poet Robert Frost (l. 5). Immediately afterwards, he mentions “the comedian Anne Meara” (l. 9) as a diner regular and “sitcom classic Seinfeld” (l. 10) which includes diner scenes. Such references suggest that diners are not only places to eat but are places that reflect American pop culture.
