In this part of the study guide, we will give you some advice on things you might want to comment upon and discuss in Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech from 2016. Remember that you should always argue for your opinion and avoid making emotional or personal statements.

You might want to discuss the way in which Michelle Obama talks about Hillary Clinton. She praises Clinton and her lifelong career, pointing out that “because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters — and all our sons and daughters — now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States.” (ll. 136-139). Note that before Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, no other woman has had the chance of becoming President of the United States. You could relate this to the concept of the “highest and hardest glass ceiling” (l. 126) mentioned by Michelle Obama, which refers to the invisible barrier that prevent women from achieving the highest positions and levels of influence due to prejudice. Obama admires Clinton for being a successful woman in an area that is traditionally controlled by men. You could also compare Clinton’s presidential nomination with Barack Obama’s achievement, as he was the first African American to become President of the US.
