In this section, we will provide information about Michelle Obama, who was a speaker at the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on 17th of January, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1992, she married Barack Obama, who became the 44th President of the United States in 2009. Before becoming the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School and worked at a law firm, but she also got involved in administrational and social affairs within the city of Chicago.

It is important to note that, during her student years at Princeton University, she was an activist for the rights of minority students and advocated against racism. She also dealt with racist attitudes during her husband’s presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012 and also addresses these issues in her speech:

That is the story of this country (…) the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves — and I watch my daughters (…) playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. (ll. 128-136)
