Style of writing
The choice of words in the narration of “Marionettes, Inc.” by Ray Bradbury indicates a formal style of writing. The narrator uses complex words and phrases to describe the action: “For, without desiring to do so, he bent forward and yet forward again until his fevered ear was resting firmly and irrevocably upon her round pink bosom” (p. 3, ll. 21-23).
However, the dialogue features informal expressions, such as “splitting hairs” (p. 2, l. 13), “been roses” (p. 1, l. 1), and contractions such as “won’t”, “I’ve”, “you’re”. They are used in the dialogue to mimic a natural speech pattern, giving it authenticity, and to convey a feeling of familiarity between the characters.
