Smith

Smith is another major character in Ray Bradbury's short story “Marionettes, Inc.”.

Smith’s outer characterisation is very brief. Like Braling, he is a -35-year-old man (p. 1, l. 2). He has been married to his wife for 10 years (p. 1, l. 3). He appears to be physically injured, as “his hand ached and his ribs cracked and groaned” (p. 2, l. 39).

Inner characterisation

Smith’s relationship with his wife, Nettie, is an abusive and codependent one. Nettie is described as controlling and clingy: “a woman who overdoes it (…) a woman to sit on your lap for two hours every evening, call you at work twelve times a day and talk baby talk” (p. 1, ll. 2-5).
