Metaphors
Metaphors are generally used to give a more vivid description of the setting or to convey a character’s views or impressions about the surroundings and the things they experience.
For example, the metaphor “His knees suddenly turned to water” (p. 3, l. 18) shows Smith’s shocking experience of having found out that his wife has taken most of his money. The personification suggests that all his strength has left his body, leaving him without solid support. The section following this line also includes several other instances where metaphors are used: “And then the terror and the loneliness engulfed him. (…) For, without desiring to do so, he bent forward and yet forward again until his fevered ear was resting firmly and irrevocably upon her round pink bosom” (p. 3, ll. 20-23). This suggests that Smith is unable to control himself – it is almost like he is receiving instructions from an external force; he becomes like a robot himself.
