Uddrag

Direct references and analogy

The address “Make Failure Your Fuel” includes numerous direct references to sportspeople and public figures including “basketball’s Kobe Bryant and football’s Peyton Manning” (ll. 31-32), “Mia Hamm” (l. 155), “Michelle Obama” (l. 181), and “Michelle Akers” (l. 273). Such references are typically used to borrow ethos and give the audience examples of role models to follow or be inspired by when trying to achieve success. Additionally, the text includes references to events such as “the ESPYs, a nationally televised sports award show” (ll. 18-19) or “the 1995 World Cup” (ll. 170-171), which put the speaker’s stories into context.

Finally, the speech includes two literary references. One is to “Little Red Riding Hood” (ll. 91-93), which builds into an analogy which is used throughout the whole speech. The speaker uses this story to show how girls are taught to be obedient when they are or should, in fact, be the wolves. The analogy helps empower the audience, who are eventually compared with a pack of wolves. The comparison serves two purposes. Firstly, it is meant to shows that women can take charge in order to achieve success. Secondly, it highlights the idea of unity, of how women should work together, and the strong need for collaboration, similar to that of a pack of wolves.
