Summary

The short story “Machine Man” by Marlish Glorie follows 19-year-old Paul who works in car wrecker’s yard.

Paul lives in a caravan at his workplace which belongs to his boss, Black Jack. He considers the TV and the microwave his family. His boss calls Paul “machine man” because he has a lot of body piercings. Black Jack often tells Paul to get a girlfriend because he mistakenly believes Paul is a virgin.

When Paul talks to his boss about seeing a woman on the TV acting like a mother, Black Jack scolds him for fantasising about old women. When Paul talks about wanting a mother, both Black Jack and another employee named Nut mock him. Nut jokes about Paul kidnaping an old lady from the nearby nursing home, but Paul starts thinking about the idea seriously as Mother’s Day is approaching.
