Summary

The article “Losing Whiteness When You Lose Your Father” by Corina Zappia talks about her mixed ethnicity. Zappia is part Filipino, part Italian, and part Hungarian. Because of her darker skin color, Zappia looks more Asian than white, and she struggles to describe her identity to others. Although she is tempted to see herself as Asian, Zappia also thinks about her father’s Italian ancestry and about the Italian traditions that she witnessed while growing up. 

Zappia goes on to discuss the prejudice and stereotypes that surround her mixed-race family. Because Zappia’s father was whiter than the rest of the family, people assumed he was not related to them. When her father used to go out with his daughters, people believed they were his Asian girlfriends.
