Direct Address

In the article “Losing Whiteness When You Lose Your Father”, Corina Zappia uses direct address. When she uses “you”, she does not address readers, but herself: “Sometimes you think you haven’t lost it and doubt that you look as Asian, as non-white, as you think. You perceive yourself as Asian because that’s how most people perceive you, but maybe you look more half-half” (ll. 9-11). Throughout the article, the direct address to herself makes it easy for the readers to imagine what being her must be like.

Although Zappia uses direct address to herself, the rhetorical device also helps readers of mixed-ethnicity feel more connected to her message. People of mixed ethnicity, like Zappia, might feel that the article illustrates their experiences as well:

To lose whiteness is to fear not so much a dilution of identity so much as a slipping-away, because you have relied on another to give and create for you a certain truth. It is to fear that you can only be defined through the presence of that...
