Title
The title of the story - “Logjam” - is symbolic as it foreshadows the conflict between the parents: A “logjam” literally means a crowded mass of logs blocking a river. However, it can also be used to refer to an irresolvable situation, a blockage or a deadlock.
In the story, the two parents reach this situation after years of accumulated frustrations caused by the fact that they have different personalities and perspectives about their roles in their marriage: “…their smiles sluiced faster and faster through the dark, like logs slipping unimpeded down an ancient long chute.” (ll. 129-130)
