Analysis

In this section, we will point out the main elements of our analysis of “Flight” by Katharine Susannah Prichard.

The story follows a single-event structure, typical of short stories. An Australian policeman removes three half-caste girls from their Aboriginal mothers as required by a government measure.

The most important characters are John O’Shea, Nancy O’Shea, and the three half-Aboriginal girls. When focusing on its setting, you should note that the short story is set in Australia, probably in the early 1900s as indicated by the references to various aspects of Australian society in the beginning of the 20th century.

“Flight” by Katharine Susannah Prichard is a third-person narration, told by a narrator who is outside the plot. Significant language devices used in the text are imagery, similes, metaphors, repetitions, and rhetorical questions.
